Curriculum

Curriculum

LUSD provides all students with standards-aligned textbooks or instructional materials, or both, in core subjects, foreign language, health, and visual/performing arts, for use in the classroom and to take home. All textbooks and instructional materials used within LUSD are aligned with the California State Content Standards and Frameworks. Instructional materials for grades K-8 are selected from the state’s most recent list of standards-based materials. Textbook materials are adopted according to a cycle developed by the California Department of Education, making the textbooks used in the school the most currently available.

Curriculum Adoption Process

Textbooks and related materials for each curricular area in all grade levels are adopted on a rotating cycle by the State Board of Education (SBE). For Grades K-8, the California Department of Education (CDE) appoints two independent committees to evaluate instructional materials submitted by publishers. Materials are evaluated for alignment to the state standards as well as California Education Code Article 3 guidelines for appropriate content. CDE must then approve the programs recommended by these two committees.

Following the curriculum adoption recommendations from the California Department of Education (CDE), LUSD initiates the adoption process. The process includes:

  • The District forms a curriculum adoption committee, composed of teachers and administrators.
  • The Committee reviews and selects a subset of curriculum adoption options for the District from the SBE list.
  • District pilot teacher teams are formed for each subject area being adopted, including teachers from relevant grade levels and/or subject areas..
  • Pilot testing teachers report on the evaluation of the curriculum.
  • Teachers vote on curriculum, based on pilot teachers’ findings.
  • A 30-day public display is held to allow parents, administrators, and teachers to view the textbooks being recommended and to provide input.
  • The curriculum adoption committee makes a recommendation to the Board of Education for approval.
  • The Board approves the curriculum.

For Grades 9-12, evaluation and approval of instructional materials is done at the local level only. The high school adoption committees follow the same procedures as the K-8 committees with one additional step. In grades 9-12, the evaluation process includes the validation that the Standards Maps submitted by the publishers are aligned to the California State Standards.
